Tuesday 3/27/18 - Departure

We decided to make one more stop at Waffle House before heading to the airport to fly home. After all, we hadn't even tried the namesake waffles! So after packing our things, we headed across the street and enjoyed a breakfast of waffles, hash browns, biscuits and gravy, coffee, and orange juice.

We gassed up the rental car and drove the short distance to the airport. We returned the car at Thrifty, and as we were heading up the escalator to departures, we saw a vintage Cadillac all decked out in a cosmic theme. It turned out to be a mixed media art project called The New and Improved Ultima Suprema Deluxe by Kenny Scharf (who did the cover art for B-52’s album "Bouncing Off the Satellites").

In addition to a shimmery paint job which included smiling comets and Elroy Jetson, there were also figurines of Fred Flintstone on the hood and a toy dinosaur perched on the roof. Sharf is quoted as saying

I have this same theme going on in the cars and also almost everything I do. A lot has to do with the future and with the past. I always combine dinosaurs, which I like because they connote fuel and oil and gasoline consumption.

On the dashboard, there were figurines of a luchador and Robby the Robot, as well as a fluroescent yellow model of the Starship Enterprise. The dashboard was blinged out with rhinestones, and the upholstery had colorful neon stripes.

This is a small regional airport, so it wasn't very busy. We were the only people in the security line. We stopped in a gift shop and I bought a sugar skull themed Mardi Gras coffee mug.

When we got to the gate, we saw cable news stories about tornadoes in the southeast of the country. There were many patrons in wheelchairs on this flight, and as they were queued up to board, the passengers joked that they should race one another.

We were seated separately on this flight, and when we arrived in Charlotte, we only had a 30 minute layover. There weren't enough wheelchair attendants present to service everyone who needed a wheelchair. One poor woman was planning to push both Craig and another woman. The other woman had to use the rest room, and we simply didn't have time.

I asked if I could push Craig to the gate and they said sure. So I took off. I ran through the airport, arriving at the gate when the flight was already boarding. Everyone there was commenting that they were glad we had made it, and that I looked as if I must have run the entire way.

We boarded the plane, and were each seated in middle seats, across the plane and several rows away from one another. Luckily it was a short flight. We arrived safely in Boston and took the Logan Express bus home, arriving around 6 p.m.

It had been a wonderful, long overdue visit with Karmilla, and we were very glad that we had finally been able to see her perform! We hope to see her again soon!
