Monday 12/1/08 - Coki Point Beach

We woke up at 9:15 am, and I wrote in the journal while Craig made coffee. I had fallen asleep last night before I had been able to write about the day's events. We hung out on the patio and ate cereal for breakfast. At home we had videotaped 8 hours of the blues music channel, and we popped it into the VCR so that we had some blues to listen to along with our breakfast. Steve was feeling much better this morning

Then at around noon we headed to Coki Point. This is our favorite beach on the island, a fun and funky collection of tourists and locals with some great snorkeling. A "parking attendant" showed us where to park when we arrived, and he directed us to his booth, where we rented beach chairs for $5 apiece. This time we had rented snorkel equipment for the duration of our stay from Secret Harbour, but in past years we had rented some here at Coki for the day. Our man set our chairs up for us in the shade. The beach was busy today and we were close to other people, but that just made the people-watching more fun. We ordered bushwhackers and our waitress gave us dog biscuits to feed to the fish.

Craig and I took our biscuits and snorkel gear and headed to the water. It was very sunny and the water was incredibly clear. The coral was very interesting here. I held the entire biscuit out and little fish would come over and nip at it like little vacuum cleaners. Then a big fish came over and took all of the biscuit in one big bite. Now I only had one tiny piece left between my fingers and I let the little fish battle it out for the final bites. It is fun to be surrounded by fish, and with your ears under water all you can hear is the little clicking sounds as they bite at any food they can find.

Craig held onto his biscuit tightly in his fist and rationed out small portions very carefully. Schools of fish enveloped him and it was very surreal. One of the larger fish actually nipped at his clenched fist which was holding the remainder of the dog biscuit, and left a little toothmark on his finger. I was glad that I had given my biscuit up willingly!!

After using up all of our dog biscuits, we headed back to the beach. We sat on our chairs to dry off and drink our drinks. We watched cruise ship tourists posing for a local artist to sketch their portrait. Local women sat in the shade waiting for hair braiding customers and their little girl wandered around. Waiters and waitresses walked the beach with trays, delivering ice cold cocktails as well as pub food. There is always so much to watch here.

It was getting warm and we decided to cool off with another swim. We let the small waves determine the course of our floating. After drying off again, we headed back to Secret Harbour at around 3 o'clock. We called Marty to see if he wanted to get together for dinner. He told us that that he had had a small car accident and needed to spend the day getting his car back on track. We made plans to call him tomorrow before heading to the airport.

So we decided we would spend the afternoon enjoying our last full day at Secret Harbour. We heated up our calzone leftovers as a late lunch and hung out on our patio. The one upside to Steve not having felt well last night was that he had more leftovers than we did - and he was happy to point this out to us. We relaxed in the room and enjoyed some down time. Later we wandered down the beach to the Blue Moon for dinner. The crescent moon was out and there were two planets beneath it reflecting on the water. It was beautiful.

We were seated with a view of the dark ocean and the moon and planets, and we ordered bushwhackers to drink. Instead of the Sade's Greatest Hits cd that they seem to play in this restaurant every year, tonight Chuck Mangione music was playing. Craig and I each got the grilled angus tenderloin 8 oz filet with a port wine demi glace, roasted garlic mashed potatoes, and fresh veggies. It was delicious. Much to my disappointment, I didn't even begin to have room for dessert.

We went back to the room and hung out inside, where it was cooler due to the air conditioning. We watched "Borat" on the DVD player for some laughs, and went to bed at around 11:30.
