Thursday 11/28/11 - Havensight, Udder Delite, Petra's Schnitzel Haus

We woke up around 8 a.m. Craig once again made Craig Mcmuffins for us for breakfast, and we had a liesurely morning. At around noon we headed to Havensight to take Mom shopping. You can get good deals on things if you know what you're looking for. I had gotten a Citizen EcoDrive watch here several years back, and I still wear it every day. I love it. No need to ever change the battery. Mom decided that she wanted to look at them, so that became our mission for shopping.

We drove to Havensight and parked there. We headed to The Pirate's Chest (a store owned by Marty's friend Sean). Marty was working there today. The store used to be up on Paradise Point, but had recently moved to its current location in the Port of $ale mall in Havensight. Up at Paradise Point, people had already spent money on the tram to get up there, and often felt like it was a "destination" and were more likely to want to buy a souvenir. The new location is closer to the cruise ship docks and gets a lot more foot traffic when people are killing time before going back tro the boat. It will be interesting to see if it translates into more sales.

We ran into Skeeter from Saturday's birthday party. He told us that his wife Donna is working at the nearby tobacco shop. We went into the Pirate's Chest and chatted with Marty. He said that he had woken up Sunday morning with 7 inches of water in his tent. His video camera was dead and his iPhone was missing (luckily, his friends had taken good care of it and had stashed it inside the Limin' Cooler for safekeeping). We enjoyed looking around the store, at both the decor and the merchandise. The place was decked out with pirate skeletons and cool antiques recovered from wreck dives.

We ran into Skeeter's daughter outside, and then we went into the tobacco store to say hello to Donna. It was nice to see them and thank them again for their hospitality at Skeeter's party.

We said goodbye to Marty and told him we hoped we'd see him after work for our final dinner. We went in search of Citizen watches. We found some in a jewelry store with an Indian proprietor. We commented on the little Hindu shrine he had set up behind the counter, and we talked to him about India. Like proprietors of high end stores in India, he offered Mom a cold bottle of water while she shopped. She came away with a new watch and a very positive shopping experience. We went to a couple of other gift stores to buy some thank you presents for our friend who was cat sitting (this was our first time leaving our recently adopted 13-year-old cats Tammy and Fluffy home alone), but they were in good hands with our friend Heidi.

After finishing shopping, we decided to take the long way home and swung by Udder Delite at St,. Thomas Dairies for some fresh alcoholic milkshakes. I got the Jamocho and Craig got the house specialty (almond amaretto). They were deliciously refreshing after our morning of shopping. We enjoyed them on the patio with an older couple. They told us that it is their yearly tradition to come here for milkshakes.

We then headed back to the hotel. We watched an orange and gray sunset. It was pretty, though it wasn't as dramatic as Friday night's.

We had hoped Marty would join us for dinner on our last night, as we were planning to go to one of his favorite restaurants, Petra’s Schnitzel Haus. However, after he got off work at the Pirate's Chest, he was still recovering from the weekend party, so just the four of us went at around 6:15. In Marty's honor, we ordered the appetizer that he had introduced us to: snails in garlic and butter. They were just as we remembered: delicious. Mom had never had them before and she was pleasantly surprised, just as we had been on our first time. Mom and I had rum punch while the guys had beer. We all got schnitzel (Craig, Mom, and I got pepper schnitzel with onions, peppers, and cayenne pepper, whereas Steve got the Jaeger schnitzel) served with bratkartoffeln (potatoes similar to home fries) and red cabbage. It was such delicious home-made comfort food. It was obvious that Mom thoroughly enjoyed her first exposure to schnitzel as she cleaned her plate. We had hoped to get some of Petra’s fantastic home-made strudel for dessert, but she had been away for the holiday weekend and hadn’t had time to prepare any.

So we headed back to Secret Harbour and decided to get dessert there. We walked along the beach looking at the moon. Then we went to the Sunset Grille and had buchwhackers and chocolate decadence - a little chocolate bundt cake with raspberry sauce and vanilla ice cream. We enjoyed sitting in the restaurant overlooking the water. The oil lamp in our centerpiece kept going out. The waitress would repeatedly come by to light it. But it just wasn't staying lit. We laughed as she brought us a new one, and soon that one went out too. Maybe it was just us.

After finishing our dessert, we headed back to the room and watched some Monday Night Football. We went to bed at around midnight.
