Sunday 11/25/12 - Coki Point Beach, Pizza, and Football

We woke up at around 8:15 a.m. We made coffee and listened to Blues shuffle on the iPod, eating cereal and blueberry muffins for breakfast. At around noon we headed to Coki Point Beach. It is a favorite of ours, and we hadn't had a chance to take Mom there last year.

Marty needed to go get a battery for his motorcycle, so he dropped us off at Coki and borrowed the Sonata to do his errand. As usual, local entrepreneurs were scoping us out as soon as we got out of the car. There was a choreographed dance to be done between locals and tourists here. A man approached and asked what he could do for us. We said we'd like to rent 4 beach chairs. We paid him $5 apiece and he dragged the chairs to a shady spot for us. He gave Mom and me each a milkbone for feeding the fish and said that if we wanted to rent some snorkel equipment, he was our man.

There had been some improvements made to the infrastructure of the beach in the couple of years since we had last been here. They had constructed a new deck area and some of the little snack shacks had been reconstructed in a more permanent manner. There were still the more ghetto-looking older ones and a food truck further down the beach. There was a sleek black cat which came over to our beach chairs. We pet her and thought of Tammy and Fluffy and hoped that everything was going ok for the catsitter.

Dawn, a waitress affiliated with our chair-provider, introduced herself. She was jolly and friendly, and we told her that we wanted to take a swim first but that we would definitely want drinks later. We put our stuff down on our chairs, and Craig, Steve, and I went into the water. The water and view are so beautiful here. It is my favorite beach on the island, as it has a fun and funky atmosphere. The water is a bit more rough than at Secret Harbour, and the waves try to move you around. There is great people watching here as well. Locals work the beach, selling food and drink, renting out chairs and snorkel equipment, braiding tourists' hair, etc. While they work, their kids enjoy playing in the sea and sand.

We could see the obervatory at Coral World Ocean Park next door, looking like a white flying saucer hovering over th ocean's surface. After floating for a while, we became thirsty and decided to head back to the chairs. As soon as we got back, Dawn was right there to take our orders. She offered us her specialty, the OGD. Short for "Oh, God Damn!" this was a lemonade slush with Bacardi rum. It sounded refreshing, so we ordered a round. We were getting hungry as well, and ordered 4 plates of jerk chicken for lunch.

We relaxed in our beach chairs, and she delivered the OGD's. Wow, they were tasty and cold! Small rainstorms often happen around midday on this part of the island, and today was no exception. Clouds obscured the sun and raindrops started to fall. Dawn invited us inside the snack shack for our lunch, but we opted to stay in our spot. The rain clouds were passing quickly, and we were mostly covered by a tree.

Before the jerk chicken even had time to cook, Marty was already back from his errand. We ordered him an OGD and Dawn brought it right away. A little while later, she was back with the chicken. The portions were quite large, and the four we had ordered turned out to contain enough that we could make a portion for Marty. The plates consisted of jerk chicken legs, fried onions, fried plantains, and salad. Deliciously spicy! And another round of OGD's, please, Dawn.

Craig, Steve, and I went back into the water. The sun was out once again and it was very comfortable to float around with an OGD in hand. A bumblebee was drowning in the water so I scooped him up in my empty cup and escorted him to shore.

At a little after 4 o'clock, we started packing up. Dawn came back to get a photo with us. She is a hot ticket. We hope to see her during subsequent visits.

On the ride back to Secret Harbour, we stopped at Marina Market for some more Smirnoff Ices. We came back to the hotel and enjoyed a drink while watching sunset from the balcony. Today was Sunday, so that means football.

We went inside and ordered a large meat lovers' and a large pepperoni, green pepper, and mushroom pizza from Señor Pizza. The delivery arrived in just 35 minutes. We watched football and enjoyed our pizza.

Then we played Pass the Pigs, a dice game which uses tiny plastic pigs as the dice. Playing with Marty is tradition, and this was Mom's first time. Depending on how the pigs fall, you get various points, and you must determine whether to stick with a safe score or gamble it all on your next roll. If the pigs touch one another (how undignified!), you lose all of your points. A game is to 100 points.

Steve won the first few games, but then we realized his scoring was questionable, so he now has an asterisk. Craig was playing in a risky manner, and would repeatedly lose all his points. Once he was one point away from winning when he lost it all. Then he made an astounding comeback to win. If I didn't have bad luck, I would have none at all. I just couldn't catch a break and I was not a contender. We listened to the blues while we played. We ended up going to bed before the Sunday Night Football game ended.
