The sacred effigy of Maximon, the folk saint of Santiago Atitlan, is no longer allowed to enter the church. However, there are wood carvings depicting his image below the altar. During Semanta Santa (Holy Week leading up to Easter), Maximon's effigy resides in this small domed room next to the church.
