Requiem for a Rooster Today we remember the most beautiful fowl that we have seen here in Morochos. He had beautiful feathers and was quite healthy and plump. We will miss the way he crowed rather quietly each morning, trailing off each cock-a-doodle-doo with an emphysemic wheeze. This morning, Rosa caught him with some help from Peluchin the puppy. She dispatched of him while the other chickens looked on helplessly, and then dunked him in a pot of boiling water in the fire shed to loosen his feathers. Craig helped to pluck and butcher him while I was working. We enjoyed his incredibly fresh and ample thighs in a hearty chicken soup for lunch, and there is plenty to spare for future meals. We thank him for the nourishment that he provides for the whole family. It's not pretty, but this is the reality of being a carnivore. It is the most honest way to provide meat. We know that he had a good life here at the finca (family farm), roaming free from the time he was a chick, eating home-grown corn. His large size was attained without the use of hormones or antibiotics, and we are thankful for his sacrifice. RIP Rooster. - P5032204
