We enjoyed Johnny A's Beck-Ola show at The Cut last month so much that when we saw that they were playing again nearby, we snatched up tickets. We hadn't been to Tupelo Music Hall since we saw Jon Anderson there in 2011. And that was in Tupelo's old location, in Londonderry, NH. In the interim, they have moved to neighboring Derry. This would be our first time checking out the new location.
We wound up with tickets at one of the front tables, very similar to the seats we had enjoyed at The Cut. We enjoyed table service and had drinks and dinner. Johnny A is nothing if not punctual. Just like the show at The Cut, the second it hit 8 o'clock, they came on stage. It was the same set that they had played at The Cut, with the addition of "You've Got to Hide Your Love Away" in the style of Jeff Beck. The song is available for download from Johnny A’s website with proceeds going to the Greater Boston Food Bank.
Johnny A. had just returned from a harrowing trip to the West Coast where he barely slept because the airline lost his equipment, and he had to improvise. We had been watching his horrors unfold in real time on social media, and it seemed that he was glad to be home. When somebody yelled out that the band was "the balls", Johnny A quipped that he loved it; "Wicked Pissah! You guys are the balls!"
