India

Prologue

We were very lucky to have had Dr. Mukul Pandya as our guide when we visited India in 2007. We became very friendly with him, and despite the fact that we were only with him for two days, we learned a tremendous amount. His enthusiasm about his country was infectious. We told him how much we would like to see Varanasi and other parts of India, and by the time we left, he had planned out a tentative itinerary for Northern India. We went back home with this spinning in our heads, and we spent the next few months in contact with Mukul, planning a trip to Varanasi, Agra, and Rajasthan as soon as possible (which turned out to be October of 2009). Mukul informed us that we could apply for a 10 year visa to India. If you go to India 2 times within 10 years, it pays for itself. We decided to take advantage of this deal. We went to the Travel Clinic and found that we were up-to-date on our innoculations, and only needed anti-malarial pills for this trip (malarone). Mukul planned the trip with the help of his friend Hemant, who runs Deshantar Travel in Jaipur. They did a great job scheduling a very full itinerary making the most of the time that we would have in India.

Thursday 10/1/2009 - Departure

We left work shortly before 1:30 and stopped at home to get the last of our things together. We left the house shortly before 3:30 and headed to Logan Airport. We heard “I’m Free” on the radio on the way to the airport and thought that it was quite appropriate. We went to Terminal A and checked in at a kiosk. We each checked a small backpack, and took our duffel bags as carry-on. We had to go through the line anyway just to check our baggage with a human. We went through a relatively short security line and then had to go downstairs. We took two very slow moving walkways and popped out at very distant Terminal A. We ate at Fuddrucker’ s. I had a four-cheese burger with onion rings and Craig had a bacon cheddar burger with fries. We went to the gate to wait for the flight. We boarded our Delta/Northwest flight to Amsterdam.

We were seated in a section of just two seats but there was an obstruction under the seat in front of him, so Craig couldn’t stretch out his legs, which is his favorite thing to do on a flight. We took off as scheduled at 7:05. They tried to get the entertainment system for our seat-back TV’s up and running, but it did a core dump and the little Linux penguin came up on each of the TV's. After a couple more reboots (during which Craig and I amused ourselves by looking at missing file error logs), the system finally became operational. For dinner we had a veggie curry with cheese and crackers, a roll with butter, salad, and chocolate cinnamon streusel for dessert. I got a ginger ale and Craig got a Heineken. After eating we tried our best to sleep. We had a 100 mph tail wind, which made our flight time 6 hours. Before we knew it, they were waking us up with calls for breakfast. We were served a very chilly banana, partially frozen orange juice, and a blueberry muffin. We saw the sunrise and flew over the North Sea where we could see a few boats below. We landed at Schiphol Airport in Amsterdam shortly before 8 am.
