Ecuador 8/18/2025

Monday, August 18, 2025 - Working Remotely

I woke up early for work today, as Ecuador's time zone is an hour behind home. So I needed to start at 7 a.m. local time. I started work in our casita and then moved into Sisa and Shina's room for the rest of the day.

Breakfast consisted of crepes, bologna and cheese on fresh bread, yogurt, and coffee.

Sisa and Yupanki got dressed up in their indigenous clothing to go to school to register for the upcoming school year. They went all the way to Cotacachi, only to find out that it was too crowded and they wouldn't be able to register before it closed for the day. But they did at least get their school ID photos taken. But they would need to return on another day to complete registration.

Craig played with the younger kids while I was working.

My stomach wasn't feeling too well, which isn't unusual. Between the high altitude and the different food, my stomach often bothers me here. So I just had carrot soup for lunch. Everyone else had fried eggs, a hot dog, rice, cole slaw, and Coca Cola.

The weather is relatively chilly here due to the altitude, and Craig and I decided that what we really needed to feel more like ourselves was a hot shower. The old water heater had been very temperamental, and often required Aida to bang on it to try to coax it to work. During our last visit, it had stopped working altogether, and the family had replaced it soon after we departed. This would be our first time using it, and it did not disappoint. We enjoyed nice steamy showers which rejuvenated us.

After work, we played with the kids. We sat at the kitchen table and rolled a ball back and forth with Kuri and Nena. Kuri led me outside to where he and Nena gathered small bright yellow flowers and put them on their fingertips, looking like claws.

We then went for a short walk with the kids, and saw a couple of sheep grazing on the side of the road.

Back at the house, Sisa video chatted her friend Anahi, and we said hello.

We talked about current events with Sisa, telling her that although she will be turning 18 next year and graduating from high school, now is not a safe time for her to visit us in the United States with all that is going on politically. We always pictured being able to have us bisit us in our home once she became 18. But even though the U.S.A. is not an appropriate destination at this time, we could take her traveling to a different destination once she is of age.

Antonio asked Sisa to create an invitation for the upcoming baptism/Confirmation party on her phone. She designed one using a photo of the little kids that I had taken yesterday.

My stomach was feeling better, so I was able to eat dinner. We had broccoli soup, chicken fried steak, rice, and fries.

We went to bed at 10 p.m.
