Tuesday, August 26, 2025 - Working RemotelyI didn't have a meeting at breakfast time this morning, so I was able to eat with the family. We had crepes filled with fresh strawberry jam, ham and cheese sandwiches, coffee, and yogurt. Jaime was around today, and so was Antonio's uncle Juan Pedro. Juan Pedro always gets very excited when he sees us, and greets us with a big smile and a handshake. He likes to help out around the house with planting, etc. Today he was shucking beans.I worked upstairs while Sisa's two cats snoozed on the bed. I got to eat lunch with the family, too. We had soup, chicken, tomatoes, rice, and potatoes. One of Sisa's cats was laying down with Abuelita's Virgin Mary statue on top of the refrigerator. This was our first visit since Abuelita passed away on Christmas Eve last year. Her presence is greatly missed. Even though she spoke solely Kichwa and we couldn't really verbally communicate with her, her smile was infectious and we got along very well. Juan Pedro was her brother-in-law, and they were very close. Juan Pedro is mute and relies on others to care for him, so we were glad to see him today. We had wondered how he was faring now that Abuelita has passed. The puppy (Oreo) wasn't around until 4 o'clock, at which point he came right into the house and the kids started playing with him. There are several windows that are either missing, broken, or drafty in the main house, and there is a missing small window in the bathroom of our casita. Especially in Sisa and Shina's room, it becomes a wind tunnel and is very chilly. We told Antonio that we wanted to pay to get the windows fixed once and for all. He went to Quiroga after work to hire a maestro to come and measure the windows. The maestro is supposed to come first thing tomorrow morning. "First thing" around here is generally as soon as the sun comes up, so we would be waking up even earlier than usual, as he may need to get into our casita to take measurements. Dinner consisted of soup, steak, fries, rice, salad, and beans. We had a serious chat with Antonio about the hardships that the family faces, and that they are grateful for our help. After our discussion and after the dinner dishes were washed, we all retired to our rooms for the night. |
