Friday, August 29, 2025 - Registering Nena for Kindergarten, Sisa's friend Keyla Visits, Playing UnoThe maestro was supposedly going to try to come this morning to measure the windows, but we didn't wake up early. We figured that if he did show up, we could get dressed quickly and let him in. But he didn't show today either.I didn't have a meeting at breakfast time, so I ate my scrambled eggs, coffee, and boiled tree tomato with the family. Antonio was back at work today. Aida gave the two youngest kids a bath together in an outdoor plastic tub with warm water. Since the water was heated, and they were in the sun, there was no screaming (which leads us to wonder why she doesn't always heat up the water for them...), and they looked adorable...rub-a-dub-dub, two kids in the tub! They were smiling and having so much fun splashing around. It is a summer Friday, so I got out of work at noon. Today was the last day to bring the required kindergarten registration documents (photo and cedula) to the community school. Nena got dressed in her school uniform and we walked up to the school. Aida gave the administrators the documents and they made copies. The administrators asked Sisa, Yupanki, and Shina how they are doing in high school, and asked what they are studying. We walked back home, and soon after we arrived, Sisa announced that her other best friend Keyla was coming to visit today. We had enjoyed Anahi's visit last week, and looked forward to meeting Keyla as well. Sisa asked if we wanted to walk with her back up to the school to meet Keyla at the bus stop. As we walked up the hill, we saw a girl standing in the road. We assumed it must be Keyla, though Sisa didn't acknowledge her right away. It was indeed Keyla, and both girls were shy at first, not saying much to one another. When we got home, we left them alone to chat. We had lunch: soup with popcorn, chicken, rice, peas, and salad. Sisa asked if we wanted to make a puzzle with her and Keyla. We had brought Uno, which is always a hit with the godchildren in Guatemala. We thought they would enjoy the game as well, so we asked if they wanted to play cards instead of making a puzzle. Sisa and Keyla were eager to learn, and caught on quickly. We had a lot of fun until it was time to walk Keyla back to the bus stop to catch the 4:30 bus. Nena and Kuri went with us. Earlier on this trip, Craig had brought up the fact that sometimes you can see the moon in the daytime. Sisa hadn't believed him, and we had spent the next few days trying to see the moon in the daylight to show her. However, there were always random clouds where the moon would be, and it wasn't until our time at the bus stop that we were finally able to see it and point it out to Sisa. He explained that the moon rises an hour later each day, so inevitably sometimes it is fully up in the daytime. Sisa got to see that Achi Taita wasn't crazy after all. Kuri had a penchant for wandering into the street. Although I'm sure he does this all the time, I wasn't going to let anything happen to him on my watch, so I kept picking him up and/or pulling him back to the curb. People were selling fish out of the trunk of their car, and Kuri kept trying to approach them, but I kept him safely on the sidewalk as the car was moving. The bus came and we waved goodbye to Keyla. We are very humbled that Sisa wants us to meet and hang out with her friends. Both Keyla and Anahi are lovely young ladies, and we are very happy that Sisa has such dear friends. We came home and played Uno with Yupanki and Sisa, and soon Shina and Nena joined as well. Both Shina and Yupanki seemed to have played before. Antonio got home from work and watched us play. Yupanki was cheating, so we coached Nena to play a card against Yupanki. There was a big ruckus with lots of laughter, and Antonio filmed the chaos. We had dinner: soup, steak, rice, and fries. After dinner, we played two rounds of Uno with the whole family. Nena didn't want any cards unless they were Wilds, and, even then, when she had Wild cards, she didn't want to play them. She just wanted to keep them in her hand. |
