Saturday, August 30, 2025 - Saturday with the Family

The maestro was supposed to come at 6 a.m. (on a Saturday!) to measure the windows. We were happy that he was a no-show again, because it meant that we got to sleep in on a day that I didn't have to work.

We ate breakfast with the family: crepes with strawberry jam, ham and cheese on a roll, and coffee.

After breakfast, I really wasn't feeling well, and I vomited. I hadn't eaten anything sketchy at breakfast, so I was surprised.

We would be going home on Monday, so we started to pack things up. Not only did we have to pack our clthes to return home, we also needed to pack away the comforts of home that we kept here in the casita.

It was Saturday, so Sisa went to Ibarra for English class. She has been studying English for years now, and we are quite proud of her progress. She works very diligently. She has to take several buses to get from Morochos to Ibarra, and she wouldn't be back until evening.

We sat with Kuri on the bench on the porch of our casita. He played with his Duplo excavator. We were happy to see that it was still around. Parts get lost and/or stolen by animals easily here, so it's always a pleasant surprise when toys with small parts survive for any length of time.

Craig ate lunch, but my stomach wasn't feeling up to it. He had soup, stew beef in gravy, and rice.

After lunch, we both took showers and I took a nap. Craig had afternoon coffee, but then he started to feel ill as well.

We decided not to eat dinner, as neither of our stomachs were feeling up to it. Also, we were supposed to go to the pools tomorrow. Antonio told us that the car would be here to pick us up at 6 a.m. He also said that he was unable to go with us, because he had to work.

That meant that we and Aida would be the only adults. The older kids aren't great swimmers, and the younger ones can't swim at all. And any time we've been to the pools with Aida, she hasn't gone into the water. So the responsibility for making sure that five kids stay safe would be squarely upon Craig and myself. If we were still feeling this poorly tomorrow, we wouldn't be up for it. Let alone the fact that leaving the house so early would be very difficult for Craig, and would start him out on the wrong foot. It would also be a long day where we would be away from bathroom facilities for hours at a time.

But we didn't want to ruin the family's day; we know they love the pools (especially Shina! Pools are called "piscina" in Spanish and we used to jokingly call them "piSHINA" because she loved them so much). We told them they should go without us. But Sisa did not want to go if we couldn't go with them. We hated to disappoint the family, since they had been looking forward to it. But everyone took it well, and we all hoped that we would be able to do it on our next visit.

We went to bed early, hoping that we would feel a bit better tomorrow after a good night's sleep.
